Hainan, separated by the 20 km (12 mi) wide Qiongzhou Strait from the Leizhou Peninsula of Guangdong, is the 42nd largest island in the world. The area of Hainan Island (32,900 km 2 (12,700 sq mi), 97% of the province) is slightly smaller than that of Taiwan Island.
